LINE Planet and VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that creates a secure network over an existing network that is less secure, such as the internet.

LINE Planet enables real-time voice or video communication over the internet, so network characteristics are crucial to user experience. A VPN changes network characteristics, which affects LINE Planet services in several ways.

Considerations for using a VPN

If you use LINE Planet under a VPN, check the items below.

1. Latency

VPNs cause additional latency. Latency is a crucial network characteristic for a real-time communication service. Generally speaking, the lower the latency, the better the user experience.

VPNs can also cause jitter. LINE Planet will increase latency to compensate for VPN network jitter.

2. Network bandwidth

VPN inserts additional headers into existing packets, so the size of the packets increases. The size of the additional headers varies depending on the VPN configuration.

For your reference, LINE Planet has recommended bandwidth for reasonable service quality.

Guidelines for using a VPN for LINE Planet

Follow the guidelines in the following sections when you use LINE Planet under a VPN.

Use a VPN for VoIP

There are many different VPN products. Among them, there are specialized VPNs to prevent problems caused by VPNs. These products can improve network impairments for Voice over IP (VoIP) by maintaining low latency or preventing jitter. If you have a chance to select a VPN product for your application, check VPNs for VoIP.

Exclude LINE Planet traffic from the VPN

You (or network operators of an application user) can configure VPN settings to exclude LINE Planet traffic from VPN. To do so, refer to LINE Planet Cloud access information in Network firewall settings.
