How much data is used by LINE Planet?

Data usage may vary greatly depending on the type of call service (1-to-1 call or group call), used features, the type of access network (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G, Ethernet), or network conditions (for example, packet loss rate). Assuming no additional settings and no loss of network, the amount of data used by one user in two-way communication is as follows.

1-to-1 call​

For simplicity, it is assumed that the caller and callee use the same access network.

Audio call​

For 1-to-1 audio calls, we can typically assume that two users are talking to each other in turn. However, since it is a real-time communication, there is a chance that two users may speak at the same time, and the amount of data can vary accordingly. Here, we assume that 10% of the communication time is spent by the two users speaking at the same time.

The following is the amount of data used per minute for each access network type.

Video call​

For 1-to-1 video calls, the average usage according to our own statistics is as follows.

Because LINE Planet uses adaptive bitrate, video calls have a wider range of deviations in data usage compared to audio calls.

Screen share​

For screen share in 1-to-1 calls, it is assumed that only one user is doing the screen share. In this case, data usage is as follows. (Values are rounded down in units of 10 KBytes.)

Group call​

Group calls have more variable factors than 1-to-1 calls. In particular, data usage may vary depending on the number of participants or the number of participants who turned on their video.

For simplicity, it is assumed that all participants use the same access network and there are 4 participants. For example, if the access network is 4G, it is assumed that all 4 participants are connected through 4G.

Audio call​

Similar to 1-to-1 audio calls, we can typically assume that only one user is speaking at a time in group audio calls. However, since it is a real-time communication, there is a chance that two users may speak at the same time. Here, we assume that 30% of the communication time is spent by the two or more users speaking at the same time.

Video call​

For group video calls, it is assumed that 4 participants are sending and receiving video in VGA and using a grid view, according to the resolution recommended by LINE Planet. (Values are rounded down in units of 10 KBytes.)

Screen share​

For screen share in a group call, we assume that only one user is doing the screen share.
